Gizmo is the newest member of our family! He has come to help fill the void left when Brewster, our thirteen year old boston passed away; and like all puppys, he does not want to be trained!
As with Brewster, we have tried everything that most dog training books tell you about traing a dog. And, as with Brewster, none of them seem to work!
Just look at that face! He looks so small and innocent it's hard to believe he can tear up an entire house in five minutes and has to pee every twenty minutes!
If Gizmo sounds like your new puppy have hope. We're going to try to give you a few clues on taming that "wild thing" that you've already come to love dispite his/her distructive nature.
You can buy every book that we have listed below to learn how to train your new puppy, or you can toss them all out and see what we have to say about training your new dog.
If you're a veteran you'll want to order some of our 2008 veteran items. Just click on the picture to see all of our shirts, buttons and gifts with this design.
First off, we've tried most of the ways that dog training books tell you on stopping your puppy from doing something bad.
A spray bottle may work the first few times that you try it! But after using it a couple of times your puppy will start trying to grab the bottle. They don't really mind the water and think that it's a game.
A can with a few coins in it startles the puppy at first but once again, it doesn't take the puppy long to figure out that it isn't going to hurt and he'll ignore it or try to grab it from your hand.
The best way to stop a puppy from doing something is to pick him up while saying no. Then hold the puppy in your arms until it relaxes. By the time that you let him down, he has forgotten about what he was doing and goes on to something else. In time saying "no" will stop him from doing whatever it was that you were trying to stop him from doing.
As with everything else when it comes to a new puppy: patience, patience, patience!
Books will tell you to put the puppy in a small room with it's bed in one corner and some newspapers on the floor. Then to keep taking the newspapers up until there is just a small piece near the door.
But, we all know that if we are going to bring a puppy home, it's going to be out where we can play with it. Why would we buy a puppy just to close it away in some room?
To train the puppy, you must first train yourself!
You must train yourself to watch the pup. Every time the pup wakes up from a nap, eats or quits playing you must pick it up and take it outside. Fvery time the puppy starts to sniff and walk in a circle you must take it outside!
It will soon learn where the door is and that it must go outside to do it's job, but you must still watch the pup so that you can let it out when it goes to the door.
For you, it'll seem as if it's taking forever to get the puppy housebroken because you'll be jumping up to take the puppy out constantly, and there'll still be an occasional "mess". But, have heart! The puppy will eventually learn and the learning will last a lifetime.

Seizures! Does your pet have seizures?
Try PetAlive EaseSure!
What is PetAlive EaseSure?
PetAlive EaseSure is a 100% natural blend of herbal and homeopathic ingredients specially selected to support the animal brain and nervous system. It may be used to support routine brain function and systemic harmony.
When should I consult my pet's veterinarian?
It is important to seek medical care for your pet if he/she has more than one seizure per month, has changed behavior in between the seizures (Excluding the "Post-ictal" period directly after the seizure) or becomes generally lethargic, has difficulty in walking or refuses food.
It is not recommended that you discontinue your pet's prescription medication without consulting your veterinarian. Also consult your veterinarian first when deciding to use EaseSure simultaneously with prescription medication so that your pet's progress may be adequately monitored.
DIRECTIONS
For ongoing long-term support: Mix drops in a favorite treat two to three times daily.
For fast support: Half the recommended dose may be mixed into a little water and squirted or spooned directly into the back of the mouth when needed (repeat after 5 minutes for up to two doses if necessary).
Cats and small dogs: 2 - 3 drops.

Rolled-Up Newspaper!
Besides the fact that hitting your pup with a rolled-up newspaper is cruel, it seldom works.
If you just threaten the puppy or tap him lightly, he'll get used to you pulling out the paper and he'll start thinking it's a game. Once this happens he'll do the very thing that you're trying to stop just to get your attention. Then he'll bark and jump at the paper playfully.
Worse yet, if you use the paper to give the puppy a hard swat, it could easily cause your dog to turn ornery in an attempt to protect itself. What you end up with is a dog that could bite someone, including family members or visitors.
Forget the rolled-up paper if you want a loving family dog!

A little about this lens.
If you've made it to the bottom of this page I feel complimented because it means that something on this lens has peaked your interest, and that's why I made it. So now I'll tell you a little about myself.
As I said in my profile, I enjoy collecting and since I retired I've found that building these lenses is a great way to stay busy; And, I hope that I'm helping some of you out by gathering information on your favorite subject and putting it all in one place so you don't have to spend hours searching for it.
I spend part of my time designing t-shirts and buttons to help supplement my social security because, as many of you know, it's pretty difficult to make it on social security. My on-line t-shirt shop is called Dene's Place after my wife.
My "retirement" came a few years earlier than I would have liked because they found that I have an inoperatable tumor about the size of a softball in my right pelvic area. They still don't know what to do about it because for now it has quit growing. One of those "leave it alone and see what happens" type things.
Anyway, if you've made it this far, I'd appreciate it if you would check out Dene's Place to see if there's anything that you might like for yourself or as a gift. It helps me pay the bills!
Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to check out my other lenses when you have time.
I enjoy collecting! It doesn't really seem to matter what it is, if it's old I'll hang on to it. So, most of my lenses are about collecting.
I also take time to design my own line of t-shirts and gift ideas. You can check them out at Dene's Place! You never know! You might find something that you like.
